Cryptoporticus of Corte Sgarzerie. General view

The archaeological area of Cryptoporticus of Corte Sgarzerie it is an extraordinary palimpsest of archaeological structures that allows you to travel through the history of the central sector of Verona from Roman times to the Middle Ages.

The excavations, conducted by the Superintendence for the archaeological heritage of the Veneto between 1988 and 2004 under the Loggia delle Sgarzerie, with ministerial funds and with the economic support of Cariverona Foundation, they highlighted a section of the underground portico (cryptoporticus) which surrounded the on three sides Capitolium, the main city temple dedicated to the three deities Jupiter, Minerva and Juno.

Built in second half of the 1st century B.C on the northern side of the forum, the building was characterized by a 35 m wide front (with three rows of six columns), three cells and porticoes on the sides, and was approximately 42 m long. On three sides a portico ran all around the temple which also had the function of an archive. Along its walls were exposed numerous epigraphs and bronze plates, of which only fragments have been found: they were laws, decrees, lists of magistrates and emperors, cadastral documents.

Reconstruction of the Capitolium (D. Gallina)

The cryptoporticus that can be visited in the area extended for over 200 m under the portico. Divided into two naves 4.5 m wide by a spine of arches supported by 78 stone pillars and covered by barrel vaults, it was weakly illuminated by "splay" windows overlooking the upper terrace.

The complex remained alive until the 4th century, when, due to the affirmation of Christianity and probably due to a fire, it fell into abandonment. After about a century Theodoric began the systematic stripping of the building to recover construction materials. The cryptoporticus continued to be used, but between the end of the 7th and 8th centuries. its western arm collapsed: water infiltrations and probable seismic events caused its collapse, consequently also causing a large part of the triple portico above to collapse. In the archaeological area of Corte Sgarzerie it is possible to see a suggestive detail of the collapse of the vaults.

Until the 9th-10th century the underground building was used as a dump for rubbish and rubble. To see a recovery in building activity we had to wait until the 12th century, when, in the context of the very strong demographic, political and commercial growth that characterized the municipal age, the aristocratic families settled in the area with their towers and their commercial activities .

The interior of one of the two medieval underground structures (so-called ice house)

In the archaeological area the remains of an underground building (cellar?), of an ice house and a tower house. The major construction episodes were the construction of the Loggia delle Sgarzarie in the fourteenth century and the Monte di Pietà in the fifteenth century.

At the end of the investigations which made it possible to reconstruct the history of the block, the Corte Sgarzerie area was arranged to be opened to the public, again thanks to the funding of Cariverona Foundation, with a targeted intervention that was able to combine the needs of conservation with those of communication, with a view to recovery and valorization aimed at bringing citizens closer to the knowledge of the ancient history of the urban context they are familiar with.

The intervention was carried out in collaboration with the municipal administration (Monumental Building Coordination), owner of the property.

In order to enrich the exhibition apparatus of the Archaeological Area of Corte Sgarzerie, Archeonaute conceived the project of creating a resin copy of the so-called "cadastre A" of Verona, one of the two rare and precious fragments of a bronze cadastral map found in the excavations of Corte Sgarzerie and currently not visible to the public.

The replica, financed thanks to the Cariverona 2018 Culture Call, was created using digital survey and 3D printing. The survey, carried out by the company Arc-Team srl of Cles (TN), was produced with Structure From Motion techniques. This model, further refined by the operators, was then printed on polymer resin using a 3D printer, with a slightly different color compared to the original (so that it is easily distinguishable), and covered with a patina of consolidating and protective paint against scratches, falls and humidity .

The reproduction of the cadastral table is exhibited within the Archaeological Area.
